Read on to know more about types of unwanted hair and how to get rid of it.
All about hair
All your hair is composed of a hard protein known as keratin and grows from the hair follicles present in your skin and scalp. There are two types of hair – the fine, soft vellus hair is generally found on the face, chest and back of women. Some women have more noticeable Vellus hair than others. The coarse, dark terminal hair is generally found on the scalp, pubic area and armpits of women. Men have terminal hair on their legs, back and chest. Vellus hair is generally easier to eliminate than terminal hair.
Most people wish to get rid of hair on most body parts because of cosmetic reasons as well as hygienic considerations. Women generally prefer to use hair removal treatments on their face, arms, armpits, bikini area and legs, while men on their face, chest, armpits and even their back and legs.
Hair removal treatments for different body parts
- Depilatories – These creams eliminate hair from your skin and are generally used on legs, armpits and the bikini area. They are also available as special formulations to remove facial hair. Depilatories react with the keratin in your hair so that your hair dissolves by itself. This can be wiped or washed away.
- Waxing – This is the most common procedure that involves the application of hot wax on your skin and pulling it off with a waxing strip or cloth before it cools. Waxing can be done on the arms, armpits, legs and bikini area. Avoid waxing your face or other sensitive areas, as well as wounded or cut skin surfaces.
- Electrolysis – This is a permanent hair removal method and involves the insertion of electric currents through your hair follicles in order to kill the roots. Electrolysis can be used to remove facial hair as well as other unwanted hair. This is one of the most expensive hair removal methods and is carried over several sittings.
- Laser – Laser hair removal involves passing laser rays through the skin’s surface in order to inhibit the growth of the hair follicles. This method works on almost part of your body, but it will be particularly effective if you have light skin and dark hair. This is a relatively long lasting treatment and covers large skin surfaces at once.
It is advisable to perform a patch test before going for any body hair removal techniques or product. If you have decided to opt for waxing, electrolysis or laser, you need to visit a professional for treatment.
